LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH Lumen Christi Parish Prayer Merciful God, you have called us out of darkness into the Light of Christ. We gather as the parish community of Lumen Christi. In Baptism, we were consecrated as your children. In Confirmation, the Spirit of truth strengthened us to bear witness to your Word. We are nourished at the table of the Eucharist. May our gifts always contribute to building up the Body of Christ. Help us to reveal Christ’s love to the world through all we say and do. Amen.

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH Auditor Statement At the end of each calendar year, an external auditor reviews the parish accounts. A copy of the Auditor’s Report is given to the Administrator, Bishop, Diocese, and the Parish Finance Council, and is published for our parishioners.

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH From the Parish Administrator, Very Rev Bernard Gordon Dear Parishioners, Our annual general report is an opportunity for us to gain a more accurate picture of what our parish has achieved in the past year of 2022. My special thanks to our General Manager, Kevin Galea, for preparing this report. Thank you to Kevin Mehl for ensuring a thorough audit of the parish accounts. In 2022 our Lumen Christi parish quietly consolidated and grew into life after the disruptions of previous years on account of the Covid-19 pandemic. Our normal service of the parish community continued through our extensive Mass timetable, catechists visiting State Schools, our young people participating in the sacramental programme for Confirmation and the Eucharist, reception of new members into our community through RCIA, hospitality by the Catholic Women’s League, visitation of the sick by Fr John Stork and members of our parish community, baptisms, weddings, funerals, education in our parish schools, administration of properties, the beautification of our gardens, care for the needy by the St Vincent de Paul, servers at Mass, musicians and singers, sacristans and cleaners. We also had the joy of a newly ordained priest Fr James Arblaster living and working among us with liveliness and enthusiasm. Last year did have its own unexpected challenges. For example, in the severe storms we experienced much damage was caused by flooding to our parish office. As the situation was investigated other problems were discovered, such as rot in the roof and asbestos, which aggravated the cost

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH Our Lumen Christi parish community also gave generously throughout 2022. For example, the total of donations to various good causes such as the St Vincent de Paul and to other appeals was $92,658 and contributions to the second collection amounted to $251,408. Thank you all for your continuing financial generosity. And we celebrated three glorious events of community joy: the Parish Dinner, the Parish Schools Carols Evening, and Handel’s Messiah in the Cathedral! While giving thanks for all the blessings we received in 2022, I look forward to working with you this year of 2023 as we deepen our awareness of Christ’s rejuvenating presence among us and develop our Pastoral Plan to place our gifts at the service of others. Very Rev Bernard L Gordon Vicar General & Administrator 2 March 2023 for what became a major work and contributed to the overall deficit for the year of $359,797. Unfortunately, the costs of maintaining our ageing buildings are high and we have been catching up with work that is necessary to ensure proper facilities for staff and parishioners in our worship, work, and service. Such a major financial work is not envisaged for this year as we engage in a time of reflection through the “Christ in You” Pastoral Plan and consider what goals we can set ourselves as a parish community over the next five years. We are working on developing other income streams that will enable the parish to be financially secure and grow in our life and mission into the future. A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in all the activities that make our parish not just survive but live as a community of deep faith, lively worship, warm welcome, and pastoral service. You make this a parish that bears witness to Christ and provides a place for people from all walks of life to enter the life of our community and meet the living God. My special thanks also to our parish staff for their great work in support of our parish.

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH From the General Manager, Mr Kevin Galea It brought me much joy to see our parish community regroup and steadily grow in 2022. Every aspect of our Parish community through the year has adapted and met the challenges of the year head on. I take this opportunity to acknowledge every member of the Parish community in the role they played in the year of 2022 keeping the hope filled loving face of Christ alive and active in our community. Parishioners, employees, volunteers, and families have all played their part in strengthening our community at a time when it needed it the most. Congratulations to you and may every blessing be bestowed upon so many of you who went above and beyond in your own way during this time. I wish to thank you for your ongoing support of the parish as we move forward with new beginnings as we develop our “Christ in You” Parish Pastoral Plan. May God bless you all, _______________________________________ Mr Kevin Galea General Manager 20 February 2023

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH Historically, these have been funds for the parish priest to use as an allowance for his financial livelihood, a stipend (small salary) for the assistant priest(s), and his weekly sustenance. After the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s dioceses were encouraged to establish a central fund to which the proceeds of each parish’s first collection (less their deductions for sustenance needs) was directed and from which stipends were then paid according to an equitable arrangement. In 1984, a central fund known as the Clergy Remuneration Fund was established. Today, this fund provides for a priest’s: • Monthly stipend • Private health insurance • Superannuation contribution This fund also provides a co-contribution towards the financial support of a priest who is on light duties due to ill health or who has retired. Supporting Our Parish A parish is dependent on the generosity of its parishioners to sustain itself and its many charitable and pastoral works. Generally, this support is through two collections at each Sunday Mass. 24 LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH Bequest Giving Remembering your faith community in your Will After providing for family members in your Will, have you ever considered leaving a bequest directly to your local parish? This is called a legacy or bequest. Over the years, many people who have felt a special connection with their local parish and church have left part of their Estate to their Parish. Like a gift to a charity, a bequest of any amount to the Church is a way of saying “thank you” for the spiritual nurturing provided to you and your family over the years. Your Parish Many of us have a special connection to our parish, nurtured by years of faithsharing, schooling, friendships, and support. A bequest to your parish, no matter how small, will help the faith community which has meant so much to you to continue its good works and its loving outreach. It is also a means by which you can plan a lasting gift for your parish which might not be possible in your lifetime. In receiving a bequest, a parish may be able to use the gift to attend to muchneeded maintenance and improvements to the church and other Parish property or put the gift towards building a new church or refurbishing their existing one. These kinds of gifts help the Parish free up other income to use toward pastoral care programs. Lumen Christi Catholic Parish The need for material and spiritual assistance provided by the parish is always growing. One of the many areas of need is to provide financial support in ongoing operational costs such as utility costs, wages for parish staff, and repairs and maintenance of our church buildings. No matter the size of the gift, a bequest of any kind in your Will can make a significant difference. Your Gift The following are some examples of how a bequest may be given: • A Specific Bequest: a detailed gift, for example, an item of property, shares, or an insurance policy • Percentage of your Estate: nominating a set percentage of your Estate for your chosen beneficiaries • Residuary Bequest: nominating a beneficiary to receive any leftover monies from your Estate • Whole Estate: nominating your entire Estate for your chosen beneficiary Would you like to know more? If you would like to know more about how to remember your Parish in your Will, please contact the parish office on (02) 4211 0500 or email wollongong@ dow.org.au. You can be assured that all enquiries are treated in the strictest confidence.

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH Finance Council appointments Finance Council Members • Bishop Brian Mascord (Parish Priest) • Fr Bernard Gordon (Administrator) • Fr James Arblaster (Assistant Priest) • Kevin Galea (General Manager) • Gabi Tobin (Chair) • Lisa de Paiva (Deputy Chair) • Lynne Hudson (Member) • Dunstan Saverimuttu (Member) • Riccardo Biondini (Member) • Linda Zamuner (Member). The Finance Council was extended for two years effective from 1 January 2023. Parish Finances Matters about parish finances Parish finances are a sensitive subject for many reasons. Parishes need to work with money from a spiritual perspective and model the values that the Gospel proclaims. Key insights Financial Philosophy How does our parish understand the money it holds, and what is the financial covenant our parish is making with its members, implicit or not? There is a huge difference between a mission-based model and a consumerbased one. Mission and Budget As with everything else in an evangelising parish, the mission must be held above all else. We also consider every line item in the budget based on how well it meets the mission of the Church.

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH Christ in You Lumen Christi Pastoral Plan Sometimes we feel that our hands are empty and so we have little or nothing to give. But at the heart of our faith is a deep conviction that God is present and has given each of us gifts which bring us great joy when we share them. These gifts become riches of life when we place them at the service of our community to build up our life together as the Body of Christ. We have these riches because Christ is present within us by his loving grace, a love and a grace that seeks to be shared as a joy for the whole people. In his letter to the Colossians, St Paul writes of the glorious mystery of Christ present within us: “To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). As a parish community, I invite you to join me in prayerful reflection on this beautiful passage from St Paul and focus on the riches of Christ that are in you and in our parish community. To discover these riches will give us hope in the love of Christ and confidence that we have much to offer for the growth of our parish life. As a fruit of this reflection we can ask: how can our riches be shared so that our parish communities of St Francis Xavier, St Brigid, St John Viannney, and Mater Dolorosa can grow together in faith, hope, and love? Further questions that may help our reflection are: What gifts do you have? How can you help others see their gifts? How can we support each other in making these gifts shine for our families, friends, and those we meet in our everyday life? CHRI ST I N YOU LUMEN CHRISTI PARISH PASTORAL PLAN

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC PARISH To bring together the fruits of our parish reflection, please join the clergy and parish staff in formulating our Parish Pastoral Plan. The aim of the Pastoral Plan is to set some practical and effective goals to develop our: • Community Life • Worship as a community of faith and service • Mission in bearing witness to Christ’s truth and love • Parish Support through our Parish Staff • Stewardship of our facilities and properties The Pastoral Plan will set our major pastoral, mission, and financial goals for the next five years and be an instrument for reviewing our progress in achieving these goals. Details on our pastoral plan can be found on our parish website lumenchristi/pastoralplan Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our Lumen Christi Parish. Through preparing our Pastoral Plan, may we see the riches God has given us to build our life together in Christ and so reveal his light to the world. We have these riches because Christ is present within us
